Play a chord. Tangent names it. All 88 keys light as you play
them while a weighted-scoring engine reads the voicing, from
plain triads through altered dominants, rootless jazz voicings
and slash chords. Play a run instead of a stack and it names the
mode. Correct a reading once and it adapts, shifting similar
voicings in every key.
Since 3.0 it shows the same notes three more ways. On a guitar
neck, where a player would actually put their fingers: one MIDI
note can be six places on a guitar, so Tangent picks the shape a
hand would use, weighing span, open strings and barres, and holds
it steady as you add notes instead of jumping around the neck.
As geometry, on the circle of fifths, on a Tonnetz, and as the
I, IV and V triangles. And inside your DAW, as a VST3 plugin with
the same display, reading the notes on the track it is on.
A ground-up Rust rewrite of an earlier Python tool, differential
tested against a 13,133-voicing corpus so every change to the
engine had to prove what it altered. Free on macOS, Windows and
Linux, with an installer for each. It makes no network
connections at all: no telemetry, no update check, no account.
